Alden Toevs, Group Chief Risk Officer, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, 16 May 2011
CEO PRIVATE BOARDROOM
Alden Toevs addressed a Boardroom event for 20 senior business executives were he discussed “Risk Management’s enhanced role in the period since the GFC”. This CEO boardroom lunch was proudly sponsored by Gilbert + Tobin and Check Point Software Technologies.
The benefits and value added by effectively implementing a Risk Management framework within an organisation is now rightly understood to far outweigh the costs associated with its implementation. To remain competitive, while establishing the appropriate risk appetite boundaries for securing growth, Risk Management needs to be absorbed into day-to-day business planning, all strategic decision making processes and risk/ reward analysis.
Alden joined the Commonwealth Bank of Australia on 23 June 2008 as Group Chief Risk Officer. Alden provides leadership in ensuring effective risk management and risk governance across the Bank and also helps govern the Group through membership on the Bank’s Executive Committee.
Prior to joining the Commonwealth Bank, Alden led First Manhattan Consulting Group’s (FMCG) risk management, MIS and mortgage banking practice areas for 15 plus years, and was FMCG’s lead consulting partner between 2000 and 2008. Over his 18 years of consulting with First Manhattan, Alden has advised more than 100 banks globally on risk, strategy, mergers and performance measurement.
